Since 1853, this estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has been owned by the British Royal Family (not the crown). It was a favourite holiday home for the Queen, who was actually in this castle when she found out about the death of Princess Diana. As we now know, it's also where the Queen died.

On April 21, 1926, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in the home of her maternal grandparents. Sadly, the house no longer exists, but the site is still known as a historical landmark.

After the Queen's birth, she moved to this townhouse located near Hyde Park Corner in London. It was considered a relatively modest home for the time — even though it boasted 26 bedrooms.

Windsor Castle

During World War II, Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, moved to Windsor Castle in the county of Berkshire for their safety. Before her passing, it was the Queen's preferred weekend home – and she relocated here for much of her final years.

On the grounds of Windsor Castle is Y Bwthyn Bach ("The Little Cottage" in Welsh). This playhouse was a gift to Princess Elizabeth and Margaret from the people of Wales in 1931.

When Elizabeth was a young girl, she used to stay at this country house. It belonged to her grandparents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore – Claude, and Cecilia Bowes Lyon. It was quite convenient as it's only 22 miles from London.

But after the death of King George VI, the couple moved out and Elizabeth's mother and sister moved in. It's been more recently known as the official residence of Charles and Camilla.

There are other homes on the property (including Amner Hall, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently lived), and the church on this property is where Princess Charlotte was christened.
