Airplane! (1980)
Leslie Nielsen starred as the very literal Dr. Rumack and mentor (of sorts) to Ted Striker (Robert Hays) in 1980's spoof on airport disaster movies.
Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it??
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.?
Rumack: I am serious… and don't call me Shirley.(Also pictured: Julie Hagerty and Peter Graves)
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
As incompetent cop Frank Drebin, Nielsen foiled an attempt to kill the queen in The Naked Gun. In this scene he spoke with Jane Spencer, (played by Priscilla Presley).
Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
Jane: Goodyear?
Frank: No, the worst.
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Frank Drebin bumped heads with the Mayor (Nancy Marchand) in Naked Gun.
Mayor: Now Drebin, I don't want any trouble like you had on the South Side last year, that's my policy.
Frank: Well, when I see five weirdos, dressed in togas, stabbing a man in the middle of the park in full view of a hundred people, I shoot the bastards, that's *my* policy!Mayor: That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of 'Julius Caesar,' you moron! You killed five actors! Good ones!
(Nielsen is pictured next to O.J. Simpson and George Kennedy)
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Frank Drebin's perfectly-delivered line to an emerging (and stuffed beaver carrying) Jane was a highlight of The Naked Gun.
Frank: Nice beaver!
Jane: Thanks, I just had it stuffed. The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991)
Nielsen re-teamed with Priscilla Presley (Jane) and George Kennedy (Det. Captain Ed Hocken) for 1991's The Naked Gun sequel .
Frank: Now, Jane, what can you tell us about the man you saw last night?
Jane: He's Caucasian.
Ed: Caucasian?
Jane: Yeah, you know, a white guy. A moustache. About six-foot-three.
Frank: Awfully big moustache.
(Pictured Robert Goulet as Quentin Hapsburg).
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991)
Frank Drebin went literal in this scene with Det. Captain Ed Hocken (George Kennedy)
Frank: That's the red-light district. I wonder why Savage is hanging around down there.
Ed: Sex, Frank?
Frank: Uh, no, not right now, Ed.
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991)
Drebin's call to criminals in The Naked Gun 2 1/2 will live long after the bust:
Drebin: This is Frank Drebin, Police Squad. Throw down your guns, and come on out with your hands up. Or come on out, then throw down your guns, whichever way you wanna do it. Just remember the two key elements here: one, guns to be thrown down; two, come on out!
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Frank and Jane (Presley) discuss the dangers of police work in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad
Jane: I've heard police work is dangerous.
Frank Drebin: It is. That's why I carry a big gun.
Jane: Aren't you afraid it might go off accidentally?
Frank Drebin: I used to have that problem.
Jane: What did you do about it?
Frank Drebin: I just think about baseball.
