Emma Watson Ushered in My Top Spring Staple That Looks So Rich

July 2024 · 3 minute read

There's nothing I love more than a really good pair of jeans — the closet staple can be styled in so many ways (see here how InStyle editors took the same pair of Madewell blues and made them their own). They can lean casual, they can lean dressy, and they call fall somewhere in between, which was the case with Emma Watson’s latest spring-perfect look I’ll be copying later today.

Watson was photographed out and about during Milan Fashion Week over the weekend, though by the looks of her low-key ‘fit, you wouldn’t think she was attending shows — and that’s exactly why I loved it. She didn’t go overboard trying to be ultra stylish by wearing things that she might not feel comfortable in. Instead, the actress put cool-comfort first, opting for medium-wash straight-leg jeans with a slightly baggy silhouette (almost boyfriend jeans, but a bit more fitted), a purple sweater, Adidas sneakers, and last but certainly not least, the spring hero that makes any outfit look so rich: a tan trench coat.

Watson’s trench coat is about as classic as the staple gets. While many brands have updated, re-worked, or elevated the traditional topper, the actress’ coat featured a streamlined silhouette, quarter-length sleeves that allowed her purple knit to peek through the slightest bit, and a storm-shield back (the back flap that helps with ventilation). It also had epaulettes, aka the shoulder straps, which are a stylish detail that also serve a functional purpose: You can strap your purse into them when you want to go hands-free.

Trench coats are obviously functional, but they’re also incredibly stylish and have the power to take your look to a whole other level of luxe. In fact, they’re my best-kept secret for looking “rich.” The outerwear simply exudes elegance, transforming any look from basic to smart and elegant, be it basic jeans and a sweater to a little black dress. Amal Clooney is also a fan — she styled her trench with a green dress and heels last October.

So, while it might still be a tad bit too cold to wear just a trench, know the time is coming — and fast. Grab yours before they sell out, and TBH, they usually do.
