Drop Dead Diva Star Set as Female Lead in ABC Family Comedy

July 2024 · 2 minute read

Former Drop Dead Diva star Brooke Elliott is eyeing a return to primetime.

The actress is set as the female lead in ABC’s untitled family comedy from Bobby Bowman (My Name Is Earl).

Inspired by Bowman’s childhood growing up with a father with mental illness, the project revolves around a dysfunctional family that perseveres despite their differences and finds happiness in unexpected places. Elliott will play the mother, Keri-Ann, who is the furthest thing from boring. She’s madly in love with her husband, Buzz (uncast) — and has been ever since they met in high school. Keri-Ann has stood by him through thick and thin — and she expects her kids to do the same. After working two jobs to support her husband as he worked on numerous doctorate degrees, she is finally getting a chance to devote time to her own career as a designer.

Elliott most recently was set to co-star in the CBS comedy pilot Furst Born two seasons ago. That ultimately did not move forward. The actress spent six seasons starring on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, which wrapped its run in 2014. Elliott is repped by Innovative Artists and Gochman Law Group.

Bowman penned the script and executive produces the ABC Studios pilot alongside Kari Lizer, Conde Nast’s Dawn Ostroff and Jon Koa and 3 Arts’ Greg Walter. Ian Fitzgibbon will direct the pilot. Elliott is the first person to be cast in the single-camera comedy.
