In 1932, Dave Gold founded the 99 Cents Only network of discount shops, which he continued to operate until his death on April 22, 2013, at the age of 8Gold’s parents were Russian immigrants who owned a general shop in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was born. In 1945, he and his family relocated to Los Angeles. His father had a heart attack shortly after he graduated from Los Angeles High School and enrolled in Los Angeles City College. However, he left school to manage his family’s liquor business following his father’s illness. Gold had observed that 99 cents appeared to be a “magic number” and decided to investigate more. “When I placed wine or cheese on sale for $1.02 or 98 cents, it never sold out, no matter how much I advertised it. Whenever I placed a 99-cent sign on anything, it was gone in a matter of minutes “In a 2003 interview with The Los Angeles Times, he explained his reasoning. In 1982, Gold established the first 99 Cents Only shop in the United States. At the time, the dollar shop idea was seen as a retail cemetery for goods that had gone bad or were damaged in transit. Golden established connections with suppliers by supplying them with bagels and cream cheese on occasion and making his shop bright and well-organized in the process. Gold, who lived in the Mid-Wilshire neighbourhood of Los Angeles, died of an apparent heart attack at his residence.
