Burley Manor Hotel Review, New Forest

August 2024 · 2 minute read

This is a hotel you come to for the restaurant – The Pig’s influence is again strong in this sense. Among olive trees and mismatched furniture in the dining room, guests enjoy a Mediterranean-themed but locally sourced menu. We benefited from confident wine recommendations (carafs available) and menu knowledge from one stand-out member of staff.

The tapas selection was slightly uninspiring when we visited, but the availability of many dishes as starters or mains livened things up. A piquing pan-fried squid with rocket and chilli (£7/13) was spot on; the baked Cornish sea bass special with kumquat tagine (£14) a genuinely innovative combination of flavours. Sides of truffle polenta chips and courgettes with garlic and chilli were tasty but on the small side (£3 each). A medley of orange blossom madeleine, limoncello brûlée, marmalade, yoghurt and orange sorbet (£7), made for a perfectly delicious but light end to a very good meal. A local gin and tonic in the bar lounge before dinner comes highly recommended, as does a coffee or digestif after.

Breakfast is served in the glass conservatory adjoined to the dining room, at its best when bathed in sunlight. There's a buffet of pastries, meats, cheeses, fruit, cereals, juices and a toasting station with a nice selection of homemade breads and preserves. À la carte dishes include eggs any way and brioche French toast.
